Description

The abbreviation for ‘Heavy Melting Scrap’ is HMS. It is the generic term for most types of heavy steel scrap, which is typically cut to a maximum size of 1.5m x 0.5m. It could and probably will be made up of cut lengths of pipe, re-bar, angles, steel poles, H or I beams, and ships plate. HMS 1 refers to heavier scrap with a density of at least 0.7 tonnes per cubic metre, whereas HMS 2 refers to lighter steel scrap such as thin wall tubing (for example, bicycle frames), sheet scrap less than 3.2mm thick, and so on. HMS 2 may include galvanised and blackened steel while HMS 1 does not.
